Following the release today of Google Maps I thought I would whip up a search bar plugin for Firefox. (Thanks to Joe for introducing me to writing search bar plugins.)
One of the great things about Google Maps is the simple query syntax:
Search for an address: type in as much of the address as you know at any level of resolution. The following queries all work provided the city and street are specific enough:
- Exact Address: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500
- Partial Address: 1000 Market Street, San Francisco
- Intersection: Telegraph and Bancroft, Berkeley
- Airport Code: JFK
- Zip Code: 10028
Get Directions: type in any of the above types with a “to” in the middle.
And much more. That’s it. Go Google!
Installing the Search Bar in Firefox
- Download the following files: Google Maps source file and the Google Maps icon.
- Copy these files to the searchplugins/ folder in your FireFox installation directory. On a Mac, this is: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/searchplugins/
- Quit all Firefox sessions and restart.

You can make a link to auto-install the plugin by linking to this:
javascript:window.sidebar.addSearchEngine(”http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/~jantin/blog/dl/maps.google.com.src”, “http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/~jantin/blog/dl/maps.google.com.png”, “Google Maps”, “General”);

On the PC the directory is C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins
But I don’t see anything different after I copy the files and restart.
Any WinXP successes out there?

I am running Win XP and had no trouble. If you drop both the src and the png (both with the same name) into the searchplugins folder and restart Firefox, the new plugin should appear in the dropdown menu right next to the searchbar text entry field…

Mapping with Google and Firefox
By now, you’ve surely heard about Google Maps. This is a very cool mapping service, which easily blows away both Yahoo! Maps and Mapquest. As with most other services, it could always stand to be closer at hand. It seems that someone has created an ex…

When I click on a Google map link in Firefox, the map window is blank. For example:
http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q=New+Braunfels,+TX
Also, Yahoo Maps won’t zoom in or out in Firefox.

That’s strange…it works fine for me. Does it work in IE? Check your Firefox prefs.? A few months ago I was playing around with the pipelining preferece and found that it would break Google Maps in all sorts of interesting ways.
To check it out, put ‘about:config’ in the address bar and make sure that ‘network.http.pipelining’ is set to ‘false’.

Thanks for the about:config tip. I was also having the blank Google maps problem and I fixed it by going to about:config and changing dom.disable_image_src_set to false
(Somehow in trying to disable javascript animation I set it to true.)
