There’s a front page NY Times story today about the effects of high gas prices. It’s a well written and researched article, but surprisingly it doesn’t mention what I think is one of the most practical Google Maps Hacks out there: Cheap Gas, which allows you to find the cheapest gas prices in your area. As gas prices continue their inevitable creep towards $5/gallon I have a feeling I’ll be using it more and more.

While I love Google Maps hacks, this one seems a tad silly, no?
Even in my gas-guzzling Jeep (20 gallon tank) the price difference between the most expensive and cheapest gas ($.15) available near Oakland only amounts to a savings of $3. What’s more, the $2.55 gas is in Antioch, CA… which is a 70-mi round-trip!!! (Using the IRS’ figure of $0.405 per mile for reimbursement, this is already $28. … although, to be fair there is $2.59 gas right here on Piedmont Ave.)

It does seem like a lot of effort for what amounts to a few dollars savings. But I feel like people are more likely to bother the higher gas prices get - every penny is like riding with Osama a tiny bit less.
